Last winter I picked up some snow tires to fit on to the OEM wheels of our Forester and this year I was shopping around for some steel wheels to fit those tires (because the price at the dealer was insane). I called a local shop, ordered the wheels, got home and looked at the invoice to discover the width of the steel wheel is 6.5" instead of the OEM 7".
I called the shop back and they said that the OEM sized winter tires would fit fine on the 6.5" wheel and there’s no point in paying the extra money for the extra 0.5" width. Has anyone here ever dealt with winter wheel widths before? Will my tires fit the new steel wheels?

There’s no issue at all fitting wider tyres to narrower wheels - within reason. 0.5" is a negligible difference so just get them fitted.

Nothing to worry about.
We run factory 215/60-16 on Impreza wheels in the winter on our forester. Et is 55 instead of 48 so they tuck a bit. Clearance to the rear suspension is the limiting factor. As long as you offsets are good you are fine.

Not to worry. Half an inch is more than I’ve ever gone on the low side, but I went a .4 inch difference narrower once then went back to wider tires and it was never a problem.

The tire manufacturer should have a minimum/maximum rim width for your size tire, check their website.

I did just the opposite without issue. My Outback came with 17x7.5 wheels and I switched over to 17x8 WRX wheels in the stock Outback tires. They fit just fine.

That’s an acceptable tolerance. Also, any wheel is stupid expensive at the dealership, I used to work in a Subaru parts department. Go price out a new alloy wheel and try to not fall over.

And here I thought getting Outback wheels for my Impreza was an upgrade.

If I had had any Outback older than my 2015, I would’ve kept the stock wheels, however I think Subaru really dropped the ball when it came to designing the 2015+ 2.5i Premium wheels. They look like they should be on a 2002 Camry.

Subaru really dropped the ball on most of their wheels recently. I have a 2000 Impreza with Stelio’s and got the wheels off of a 98 outback.
